What is stress?
Stress is the repeated activation of your sympathetic nervous system, which is the fight-or-flight response to potentially harmful situations. This helps us in the wild where the two solutions to a problem are to fight it or run from it.
But in real life running away is not an option and fighting it can be illegal.
More than that, the stressors might not even be obvious to you. You just know you feel anxious and guilty, but can’t really put your finger on exactly what’s causing it.

How Does a Punching Bag and a Treadmill Help with Stress?
Stress is our fight-or-flight response.
We can’t really run from our real problems or fight it head-on. Our body has a craving to get rid of this feeling.
Don’t you want to just punch the problem? Don’t you just want to run?
Now if you were to punch the actual cause of your problem (i.e. your coworker), you would most definitely get fired, or worse, arrested. If you tried running away from your coworker, you would probably end up in the middle of nowhere.
So why not punch a punching bag instead and run on a treadmill?
Does a Punching Bag and a Treadmill Help with Stress work?
If you set time aside from your busy schedule for stress management sessions, then you will quickly start feeling the stress melt away.
Just 15 minutes going at the punching bag like your life depends on it will burn over 100 calories! Now the calorie burning is only a side product.
The actual benefit is how you’ll feel after the session.
After this 15 minutes session you will feel:
- Relaxed, but also pumped up
- Your mind will be quieter
- Increased Confidence
- Increased Self Esteem
- Increased Self Efficacy
- A sense of calm throughout the day knowing that you have an outlet for your stress
Running also helps you feel this way.
You’ve probably already heard of the runner’s high.
The feeling of confidence and power you feel at a certain point in your run.
If you did either or both regularly, you will feel the stress melt away and allow yourself to be at your best.
How Do I get started on Using a Punching Bag and a Treadmill?
The best option would be to join a structured exercise or fitness program.
Some options include:
- Neighborhood Gym or Cross Fit
- Martial Arts Class (boxing, taekwondo, karate, kickboxing, muay thai, judo, etc)
- Go running outside, preferably with someone
Now if these don’t appeal to you and you would rather go all out in the comfort of your own home, then this is what you will need:
I prefer a standing punching bag for the purpose of relieving stress. It’s easy to move around and doesn’t take up too much space. The one I use and has made the biggest impact in my life is the Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag.
You quickly realize that punching can really hurt your knuckles and your wrist. That’s why it’s also a good idea to get punching gloves. The one that helps me and will help you to is Everlast Mixed Martial Arts Heavy Bag Gloves.
A treadmill purchase is a serious purchase. It will take a lot of discipline to make this purchase worth your while. If you commit to using the treadmill regularly for at least 6 months, then the cost of a treadmill will be worth it. You can always get a used treadmill online, or you can check out NordicTrack T Series Treadmills.
Exactly like how a punching bag can hurt your knuckles and wrist, running can lead to heel and ankle pain. That is why buying proper, high-quality running shoes is important. There are many options out there, but the one I would recommend is NIKE Men’s Flex Experience RN 7 Running Shoe and Nike Women’s Revolution 4 Running Shoe.
Hydrate, Hydrate and Hydrate. It is very important to make sure you drink water. Sometimes you can absorbed into your stress release session that you might overexert yourself. It’s important to listen to your body and stay hydrated with cool water. Any water bottle is fine, but no other bottle keeps your water ice cold as long as the Hydro Flask Standard Mouth Water Bottle.
Stress is inevitable, but it is up to us to handle it effectively. I have presented you with some options. These may work for you or they may not.
